Curator for the Africa Department 

 

 

The Linden-Museum Stuttgart ranks among Europe’s most important ethnological museums. We are currently searching for a graduate to immediately fill the full-time position of curator for the Africa department; this placement will initially be for a limited two-year contract, set at the pay grade 13 TV-L. 

 
Among the tasks assigned to this position include the representation of the Africa department in matters concerning organizational and scientific questions; care and inventorying of its holdings; the maintenance of professional relationships with associated institutions and cultural associations; and the conceptualization and implementation of both a new permanent exhibition as well as other special exhibitions pertaining to Africa, along with accompanying programs and publications. Further tasks include the supervision of interns and trainees, the handling of requests and acquisition of third-party funding. 
 
The excellent collections in question comprise around 40,000 objects from Sub-Saharan Africa; in terms of content, an emphasis is placed on Cameroon, the Congo and the kingdom of Benin. Interest regarding current developments in Africa, as well as research experience and time spent in Africa are desirable. 
 
A candidate should have completed his/her university studies in ethnology with an emphasis on Africa, or in a related field of study - preferable with a PhD. A good level of English and French are required, along with at least one language relevant to this region. Furthermore, experience in practical museum work is also a prerequisite.  
 
A passion for mediating information to a wide public, capacity for teamwork and interdisciplinary cooperation with all the other departments of the museum, individual initiative and readiness for duty, and the ability to withstand stress are all indispensible attributes.
